African leaders criticised for failing to address food security

Food aid. With huge deficits in production, food continues to cost more than it should in Africa today and prices continue to fluctuate leaving many poor people in danger.

In a quest to boost food security in the continent, African Heads of State launched the Comprehensive Agriculture Development Programme(CADP) to provide them with a solid framework for action. We need to ensure that every African country has a national strategy for agricultural development.

This was closely followed by what is now commonly known as the Maputo Declaration in which the leaders pledged to raise agricultural spending to 10 percent of their national budgets. Though the 2008 target year has passed, current conditions amply justify the continued pursuit of this goal.
